Arrest Made in Byrnes Drive Murder Investigation

Columbia Police Department (CPD) Investigators have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with a murder that happened earlier this month.

According to Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook, Zion Kelly is housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC) charged with Murder in connection with the death of a 31-year-old male acquaintance. CPD Investigators arrested Kelly late yesterday afternoon.

On June 8, 2023, CPD officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Byrnes Drive at approximately 2:30 a.m. They found the victim with severe blunt-force trauma to his head and face. EMS pronounced the victim deceased in the backyard of the home.

A motive for the death remains under investigation.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office is assisting CPD with the investigation.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
