Mitchell Street Murder Suspect Arrested in Kansas CPD Warrants to be Served

By October 25, 2023Press Releases

A male suspect accused of fatally shooting a man last week on Mitchell Street has been located today in Kansas.

Police Chief W.H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook announces that shortly before 10:30 a.m., officers with the Junction City, Kansas Police Department detained 34-year-old Demetrius Jones during a traffic stop.

CPD Investigators are coordinating extradition efforts with Kansas authorities. Once Jones is brought to Columbia, he will be served arrest warrants for Murder, Attempted Murder and Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime.

Case Re-cap:

Jones is accused of shooting the 27-year-old victim identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as Ernest Matthew Byrd in the upper body while at the 1800 block of Mitchell Street on October 16, 2023. Jones was recently pronounced deceased at a local hospital.

At this time, CPD investigators believe that Jones argued with another man while on Mitchell Street, retrieved a gun from inside a vehicle, and fired several rounds at the two victims. The other male victim received a graze wound and was not seriously injured.

All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
