Two Men Cited for Illegal Trash Dumping

By January 23, 2024Press Releases

The Columbia Police Department’s (CPD) Code Enforcement Division officers have issued a court summons to two men for allegedly dumping dozens of tires in a City of Columbia community.

With the assistance of surveillance cameras, the men, working for ‘College Hunks Junk Removal’ are accused of dumping approximately 40-50 tires along Belasco Street earlier this month.

The incident happened on January 11, 2024, at approximately 9:00 a.m. in the Highland Park neighborhood.

All of the tires were removed with machinery and properly disposed of by a Code Enforcement Team.  In 2017, a Palmetto Pride and S.C. Litter Control Association grant assisted CPD with purchasing surveillance cameras to reduce incidents and identify offenders. Additional cameras have been installed across the City of Columbia

A CPD officer and members of the Code Enforcement Team visited the men’s employer to discuss the illegal tire dumping, showed them the video evidence, and identified the employees. The men were issued a summons to appear in court.  Here is the City of Columbia ordinance regarding environmental health and sanitation:

One man is seen dumping tires on Belasco Street on January 18, 2024.  Two other people are accused of illegally disposing of materials along Ames Road on January 12, 2024.  Contact Crimestoppers with information about these cases.
